i've come to the realization that i live a really peaceful, homebody-ish kind of life these days (this is a good thing.. hehe.. having time to myself is something i always wished for more of during my hectic days at cal :o) for all you social butterflies out there, you should give staying in for the night a try once in a while, you may be surprised how nice it is!) i just came back from watching friends in the tv lounge.. (our weekly friends "screening" is something my roommate lisa and i really look forward to :o) yeah, and i've been home most of the evening writing my paper, and cooking dinner, and just, in general, having a nice, relaxing, and hopefully moderately productive! night :o)
i'm going to the intervarsity fall conference this weekend in santa cruz.. yeah, we're leaving tomorrow afternoon and getting back early sunday afternoon! i'm pretty excited about it.. really looking forward to spending some time with God, and of course, getting to meet some of the other christians at stanford :o) so that's really cool...
hmmm... other cool things... :o) carson updated his blog yesterday night! it looks really pretty :o) (you can check it out, i linked to it over in my links column :o) also, i got a call from yiyin last night! yay! it's really cool when people call me (hint hint hehe..) yeah, i miss you guys and would love to get a chance to catch up :o) what else.. i'm writing a paper about the new "tablet pc" which is super cool! you can check it out! yup yup, oh and yesterday was my roommate lisa's birthday.. happy birthday lis! (yeah, there really are sooo many october babies! i wonder if i happen to know more october babies because i too was born in october.. like maybe we're just drawn towards one another subconsciously when we meet :o) haha.. or maybe not!)
today is mike's birthday! happy birthday mike! :o) (for those of you who don't know, mike is my sister julie's boyfriend.. ) yup yup, julie and i spent a good deal of time planning out their *special* day today... hehe... it was so fun! i'm so excited about it, like i was all giddy when we were sending them off, even though i'm not really invited to come along (which i totally understand, but just makes this situation more funny..) i even lent her my car for the day to make it all possible :o) so i'm without wheels.. which is usually fine since i have a whole lot of work to do, but carson came down to visit me for the day (yay!) but.. unfortunately, we aren't really going anywhere (although, he seems really tired! he's actually like totally passed out asleep right now.. so i guess he doesn't mind either :o) so it's all good in this hood! hehe..)
in fact, there were sooo many bdays this week... (a few belated shout-outs!) happy birthday amy, linda and harv! i hope that it's the beginning of a really great year for all of us :o) it was kind of sad though since there were so many bday surprises and such that i couldn't go to! i really wish i could have been there to celebrate your special day with you guys *wishful smile*... totallly would have loved to! :o) it actually has made me realize that i'm, officially, not like a berkeley-ian anymore (i guess i should have realized that a while ago but somehow i didn't! hehe..) yeah, it's just a part of life i guess, that people move on to different places and start up different lives... but hopefully we'll all still stay connected through the bonds of friendship and love :o) and i guess aim and email and phones don't hurt either! haha..
okie dokie... i'm working on an essay right now (or, not RIGHT NOW, but in like a few minutes when i've posted this blog entry! hehe.. not to be nitpicky, but i didn't want you guys to think i could multitask THAT much... write an essay WHILE posting blogs is pretty intense multitasking! :o) yeah, i've realized that i seem to do an awful lot of writing for a cs major eh?! i could use some of the english-y brainpower of fiona-jenn shao-annie liao right about now :o)
you know what's cool? like when unexpectedly nice things happen for you... for an immediate example, we have this project due on friday for which i didn't have a partner :( and what was worse, i didn't know anyone in my section to ask to be partners even.. all this was kind of weighing down on me, like both in the sense that i missed being at cal where i always HAD a partner and also because i really didn't know what i would do :o) but yeah, today in lecture, this random girl comes up to me and asked me to work with her -- and what's more, her schedule like totally matched mine! (i mean, since we only have two days to do this thing now, that was really important! and, i really had been wanting to go to lsf tonight, it was perfect that she couldn't work on it until tomorrow either *big grin*) wow, i really thank god for just these random blessings... :o)
soo.. yesterday was my 22nd birthday! :o) yup yup, as yiyin says, i'm a *palindrome* now... hehe.. it's weird since the last time i was a palindrome, i was 11, and the next time won't be until i'm 33! so i guess a lot changes/happens in 11 years :o) anyways... before i start spiraling downwards into a mid-life crisis (hehe..j/k!) ... i realllly wanted to say thanks soooo much to everyone who hung out with me, or called or emailed or just in general, made me feel like a special person, just for having been born :o) it really did mean a whole lot to me!
yup yup, yesterday was just a really fun day! (i haven't had a totally fun, work-free day in a while, so it was *extra extra* nice for me! hehe..) it all began two nights ago (firday night) when my friend annie came to stay with me in stanford :o) we went shopping (where i was realllly good and didn't buy ANYthing.. well, except for some fries, but that's okay right? still thrifty?! :o) anyways.. and then we cooked dinner together and watched momento... (it's funny because i actually got the momento dvd as a birthday present from allen LAST year, but didn't watch it all the way through until one day before my birthday this year :o) but it was really ... umm... *thought provoking* :o) we were actually both rather confused by the ending, but after some discussion, came to a conclusion, but it wasn't really a satisfying conclusion! the movie was kind of disturbing for me actually... but it WAS really well done.. i don't know what kind of recommendation i can give but that! :o) and then yesterday morning, i had brunch with annie, julie (and her drawmate pat!), lisa (my roomie at stanford! she's really cool :o) hehe..) and my new friends at stanford (yes, i am making some! hehe..) -- paul, howard, jason, conrad, david, byron .. haha.. it's funny because actually all of them, excluding conrad, were guys that had also gone to berkeley :o) i guess we tend to stick together still... plus, i guess i haven't really had much time to get to know too many new people here yet, since i've only been here for about three weeks :o) but... nonetheless, brunch was really fun! like, it's cool that we were hanging out though, since even though we all did go to berkeley and did know each other (generally speaking), it's one of the first times we've really HUNG OUT like purely for fun! (i.e. not like talking after class or at orientation or what not :o) hehe..) and we had brunch at this place called hobee's really close to stanford, which btw, has reallly great coffeecake! it's supposed to be famous for the coffeecake and indeed, the stuff is really yum! :o)after brunch, annie and i took a bike tour of stanford.. (btw, i really like biking around these days.. it's so convenient and plus, i really like riding my new bike! it's so cute, i have to include a picture of it here.. hehe.. except mine is the cadet blue/silver one! the pink was a little toooo much for me! although i HAVE seen it around campus!) anyways.. after that, we headed up to berkeley, where i dropped off annie and then met up with carson :o) i hadn't seen him for a week.. which felt like a while though! so it was cool seeing him again :o) i think that since it's a little more rare for us to hang out these days, it seems more special, and we seem to have *more fun* each time we ARE together :o) anyways.. we got a car wash for my beetle (it was sooo dirty! it literally pained me to see it all laden down with dirt these past few weeks.. but it's back and shiny and better than ever again :o) hehe..) and then we drove to sf... which took like forever and a day since there was a car accident blocking lanes of university and causing all sorts of crazy backup! but yeah.. we finally got to the city and had a really great dinner at the house of prime rib... like i've heard about it so much before, about how great it is and all, and it was really great, like i wasn't let down at all! :o) the style of the dinner was sort of like when i went to lawry's in la this summer (also a great memory!).. but without the creamed corn which was missed! :o) hehe.. and then, as if we hadn't eaten enough! we met up with a bunch of crossroaders past and present at ghiradelli! yay! :o) carson and i were kind of early and it was freeeeezing cold out there, so we alternated between keeping-watch-while-staying-warm-inside and dancing-around-outside-to-stay-warm hehe.. but yes, it was soooooo nice seeing everyone again, and yeah, i've really missed our little family while i've been at school! :(* thanks to frances, angel and hs who sang this like incredibly lovely harmonized version of happy birthday to me :o) and wow! congrats to all the groups of people who finished earthquakes! especially those guys who had done the 5-4-3-2-1 burger thing the night before.. i mean, talk about stomachs of steel! :o) and thanks to everyone for the hugs and the good wishes and of course, for making it one of those nights when i (as jen shao put it..) smiled so much my face was sore :o) i think winston and carson took lots of digital pictures which hopefully will be posted soon for the enjoyment of all.. yah? :o)
but yeah, i just really had the greatest day :o) THANKS to everyone who made it such a special day :o)
haha.. but as a consequence.. today is a day for muchisimo studying now *weak and somewhat wan smile* :o) wish me luck yah? :o) i'll keep ya posted! (pun very definitely intended! hehe..)
hello! it's noon on a sunday.. and i'm posting to my blog again.. doesn't all seem *right* again in the world?! haha.. i'm just kidding... i really doubt that the "rightness" of the world has much to do with the "jennuine hwangster blog" :o)
so yeah.. good to my word (typed or otherwise! hehe..) i wanted to write down an update on the "life of jenn" since the end of august... i could just keep putting it off since i know it will take a long time or i could just dive in and write it down before i forget and you guys all stop even caring about it :o) so.. *deep breath*.. here it goes!
after i ended work on AUGUST 23RD! (which sounds like forever and two days ago by now huh! hehe...) i was packing up my stuff to move out of josh's house (which was sad since i really loved living there and all the housemates were just the coolest crop of brothers and sisters :(* i miss you guys!) and actually, the night before i left for home, a bunch of cfc people came down to union city to have a goodbye-jenn-dinner .. it's kind of funny since i'm not really that far away, and i still come back to berkeley periodically, but it was really a point of transition between being a really committed member of the church and being.. well, whatever i am moving on to i guess :o) it was so sweet of them, especially the berkeley students, for whom it was the first day of school! i mean.. for everyone who was there that night, wow, i was really touched :o) *big happy smile*
and then i was at home in san diego for a few days before leaving for china and taiwan! :o) yup.. the trip was.. really really action packed! first, my family flew into beijing and went on a 8 day tour of beijing, xian and shanghai .. actually, only my parents and i went on the tour itself, my sister was joining a school program between peking university and stanford university in beijing and just flew over with us :o) it was funny because when we first met the people in the tour group the initial night, we were a family of four.. but then all subsequent days, we were only a family of three.. sometimes, people would tentatively ask questions like "didn't you guys have another daughter?" and we'd explain the whole thing (much to their relief i would imagine! hehe..) anyways.. china is such a cool place! i mean, we saw sooo many historical sites (i mean, a history of thousands of years in 8 days?!) and the tour guides were really great about giving us the historical/legendary backgrounds of everything that we saw.. (as a side note, it really inspired me to learn more about chinese history and folklore.. seriously, chinese people -- collectively -- were really incredible and creative and i guess i never really KNEW much about the historical people and all that before this trip!) actually, learning about some of the individuals made me realize that a lot of the emperors/empresses (a.k.a. the "sons of heaven") were really crazy (like mentally! hehe..) for example (i cite this example a lot so sorry for those of you who have heard it already! hehe..) the terracotta warriors... the emperor reallllly believed that burying thousands of soldiers would protect him in the afterlife... essentially trusting his eternity to an army of clay! AND, what is worse/kind of more fascinating is that he had the kind of power to make it happen! to command big groups of artisans to spend decades! working to make this happen! (as a side note.. i always think it's sort of ironic that the "son of heaven" would need statues to protect him when he is in heaven.. like, in contrast to Jesus who is the son of God, and who can command all angels and demons by His name alone..)
but yeah.. after our tour of china, we were pretty tired :o) literally walking around all day for several days in really hot/humid whether :o) but then, my parents and i flew to taiwan for a few days before heading home again.. it was really a blessing because the day we were to fly to taiwan, was the day that the typhoon was supposed to hit taiwan! it was definitely ..umm.. some cause for concern :o) but by God's grace and as a demonstration of how He answers our prayers, the typhoon kind of hovered outside of taiwan for a day and then moved on! :o) yeah.. so we were able to have a really great visit to taipei and to see all our relatives.. my dad and my mom got to spend time with their dad and mom (respectively) and i got to see almost all of our relatives for a while :o) and of course, we all were taken out to loooots of really great and yummy food (we ate like sooo abundantly every meal!) and did lots of shopping and just in general had a really fun time :o)
hehe.. okay...
soooo, that was my trip! in a nutshell (a kind of rambling nutshell :o)
after i got back to san diego, i had about a week to hang out there before moving into school... it was really awesome for two reasons:
1) yasmin was also down there, preparing to leave for med school, so we got lots of opportunities to just hang out and talk and go try new dessert places :o) hehe.. i hope she's settling down well at med school in chicago, we promised to call each other after a few weeks for a really *honest* update of how we're liking it :o) but yeah, it's just always so great being able to be close to old friends still.. and to get together after not seeing each other for months and to just still pick up right where you left off :o)
2) also, carson flew down to visit for a weekend! :o) we got to hang out in the finest-city-in-the-world (self proclaimed! hehe..) and just spend some time together before we would be at rival schools and all the berkeley-stanford tensions takes effect (hehe.. i'm just kidding.. hopefully carson, and all my other berkeley friends, can see beyond just the stanford school that i attend now :o)
okie dokie.. so now you guys are all caught up to thursday, september 19th... which was the day that i moved up to stanford university... (more coming soon! i didn't want to write soo much that it would intimidate people from reading.. although i might have already passed that limit like 5 pages ago! haha... thanks for those who made it this far :o) *two thumbs up!* hehe..
hi everyone! (haha.. i don't even know who really reads this anymore since it's been inactive for such a long time! :o) but to those of you who were loyal and devoted to checking-back-every-once-in-a-while-just-in-case-i-had-changed-my-mind-about-not-posting-to-this-blog-anymore, i realllllly commend/thank you :o) hehehe... it means a lot to me to have an audience that really cares :o)
anyways.. this is just a really brief update.. :o) i've updated some of the links and yes, i do intend to post additional blogs every once in a while to let you know how i'm doing :o) i'll be updating it later on today to tell you all about my trip to china/taiwan and about starting school at stanford.... (i know many of you feel a bit betrayed by this choice of locations, but i hope our friendship can survive this bit of tension eh? *wink wink* and an *elbow nudge*)
yep! welcome back! :o) i've actually really missed posting to this blog hehe.. :o)
